A Japanese pharmaceutical firm is selling a new erectile dysfunction treatment that may not only improve its sex lives but also boost its chances of surviving the winter.
Takahiro Yoshida, chief executive at Haleon Pharmaceuticals, will not be taking the drug, which is based on the compound sildenafil, the chemical used in Viagra and other drugs for erectile dysfunction.
But a source told the New York Times that the Japanese drugmaker is "reversing the trend" of selling the erectile dysfunction drug for the treatment of men with erectile dysfunction.
It is also selling the drug for the treatment of "male erectile dysfunction," or impotence, rather than for "normal" sex.
Hazuroto said the firm was developing an erectile dysfunction treatment for the first time.
"The drug is currently under development for treating erectile dysfunction in adult men, with an expected launch this spring," the company said in a statement.
The Japanese pharmaceutical firm also is seeking approval for its first-ever non-prescription version of Viagra, the drug's active ingredient.
A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment. She did say the firm is conducting clinical studies for the drug in the United States and Europe to determine how well it works for men with impotence.
